Support While Cycling: A Fierce Hazel Collab

Depending on what region you live in, the weather may have shifted in your favor from extreme heat to cooler temperatures. With the changes of the season, a change in your workout routine may be knocking at the door.

Whether you are a seasoned cyclist, just getting started, or thinking about cycling, make sure you have everything your need for your ride. We're talking about a place to keep your essentials (did someone say snacks?), as well as the support you may need in a sports bra.

We've invited a Frankie, founder of Fierce Hazel, to share her journey of cycling.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your cycling journey? What inspired you to start cycling?

I didn't even clip into a bike until I was 40 (I'm 56 now), and cycling has changed my life! I first clipped into a bike on the side of a mountain along the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. I got completely hooked on the freedom and peacefulness of being on the road. That feeling of accomplishment after a challenging climb or a beautiful route keeps me returning for more!

Getting to that happy place was significant because, after years of being in a not-so-good place, I finally realized that I had the power to make my life better through strength, determination, and grit.

So yeah, biking the Blue Ridge Mountains was an extraordinary feeling. But knowing that I had the ability to make my life better was everything.

Who is Fierce Hazel?

Fierce Hazel is more than just a bike bag company– it's a community of people passionate about having fun while pushing their limits and feeling included and confident.

I started Fierce Hazel because I didn't feel there was a place for me in the dominant cycling culture. I want to show people that cyclists are diverse and that we matter. You don't have to dream about being a professional in order to be a cyclist. All types, shapes, and sizes of people are cyclists!

We design and manufacture high-quality, ethically sourced bike bags that empower people to explore more and conquer the open road, whether they're pro cyclists or commuting to their local farmer's market. We focus on functionality and features that truly meet the needs of cyclists on the road and trail.

Why is proper breast support important for female cyclists, especially during long rides? How can an ill-fitting sports bra affect a cyclist's performance and comfort?

Proper breast support is crucial for female cyclists, especially on long rides. Without a good sports bra, you can experience bouncing and chafing. This can be incredibly distracting and zap your energy, making it difficult to perform at your best and enjoy the ride. A well-fitting sports bra minimizes bounce, provides support and comfort, and allows you to focus on the road ahead.

A supportive bra is even more critical if you're riding a gravel bike or mountain bike. Gravel is obviously more bouncy and rough, so a bra that may have been okay on a smooth road ride may not give you the support you need on a rocky dirt trail.

What should cyclists look for when choosing a sports bra for their rides? Are there specific features that are particularly beneficial for cycling?

cycling

When choosing a sports bra for cycling, look for medium- to high-impact support with features like wide straps and moisture-wicking fabric. A snug but comfortable fit is key – you don't want anything digging in, but it should also prevent bouncing. Consider breathable mesh panels and chafe-free seams for added comfort on longer rides.

If you wear a heart rate monitor around your chest, I'd avoid any bra with an underwire. An underwire bra may prevent a good fit.

Have you ever had an experience where a proper or improper sports bra made a significant difference in your cycling performance or comfort?

As I moved from mainly doing road cycling to more gravel cycling, I needed more support for the bumpy trails.

What are the key health and wellness benefits of cycling that you think every woman should know about? How has cycling positively impacted your own health and well-being?

Cycling is a fantastic all-around exercise! It's a great way to improve cardiovascular health, build strength and endurance, and even boost your mood. Personally, cycling has been a game-changer for my stress levels. It's a great way to clear my head and get some fresh air. Plus, the sense of accomplishment after a challenging ride is the best feeling ever!

For those new to cycling, what tips do you have for integrating cycling into their daily routines? How can they start small and gradually build up their endurance?

Don't try to do too much too soon! Start with short, manageable rides and gradually increase the distance and difficulty as you get stronger. Find a safe and scenic route that motivates you to get out there. There are also tons of great resources online and cycling communities that can offer support and encouragement. Having a buddy to help you get up and get out is always a plus!

Besides a good sports bra, what other essential gear do you recommend for female cyclists?

A properly fitted helmet is absolutely essential for a fun ride. Here at Fierce Hazel, we recommend pairing your sports bra with our range of bike bags! We offer a variety of styles and sizes to fit your needs, from wallets and pouches for essentials to handlebar and saddle bags for longer rides. Our bags are designed with weatherproof materials, secure closures, and easy-access compartments to keep your gear organized and protected on the road.

The Fierce Hazel True Grit Handlebar Bag will hold everything you'll need to keep you organized and riding strong: snacks, a repair kit, and an extra tube in case of a flat are important. Our Echelon All-Conditions Ride Pouch will keep your essentials safe and dry!

In addition to our bags, comfortable cycling shorts with padded chamois will make a world of difference on longer rides. But you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on a cycling kit. Seriously, a thrifted T-shirt works just fine!

What does your training regimen look like? Wat role does nutrition play in your performance and recovery?

My training regimen varies depending on my goals. Still, it typically includes a mix of longer endurance rides on the weekends and trainer rides during the week. I use the Zwift app to keep it fun!

Nutrition is SUPER important. Food is the fuel we need to keep riding strong. Often, I see people needing to eat more while on a ride. Carbs and calories are essential for a fun ride! Plus coffee! A good ride is only complete with coffeeand it is especially better shared with friends.

When is cycling season?

The height of the season is spring, summer, and the beginning of fall. There's not much activity November through March.

Cycling Awaits!

Thank you Frankie for sharing your passion for cycling and allowing us to see how life-changing doing what you enjoy can be. Cycling offers not only physical benefits but also emotional and mental empowerment.

Be sure to checkout Fierce Hazel and their welcoming community that celebrates diversity in cycling while also offering functional, high-quality gear.

And remember, proper breast support is needed during cycling.
